I have a problem with pppd on a SMP
(dual Pentium III-450, ASUS P2B-D) Linux box. I used pppd 2.3.5 on my Linux
(kernel 2.2.5) together with chap/pap to connect to my ISP. Now, I had to
upgrade my system with a second processor in order to get enough power for some
computational fluid dynamics simulations. Everything works fine, except pppd. As
soon as I enabled SMP in my kernel (I only set SMP=1, enabled enhanced
RTC-support and MTRR and made sure that APM is disabled and changed no other
options), pppd failed to establish a connection. My syslog looks as
follows:
pppd[419]: Serial connection
established.
pppd[419]: ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT):
Operation not permitted(1)
pppd[419]: Hangup
(SIGHUP)
pppd[419]: Exit.
Since I was not able to solve the
problem by myself (read man-pages, tried different kernel configurations and
tried (in vain) to understand the problem), you are my last chance.
Is this a known problem? Do you have
any idea why this happenes and how to solve it? What operation is not permitted
and why?
I would be very thankful if you could
help me.
best regards,
Ivo
