Hi all
first a question if I may - please can someone tell me how to
change the screen resolution in KDE i I installed 32bit 800x600 and
1024 by whatever and now the desktops bigger then the screen
and of all the things thats gone wrong, thats the onethats driving
me to distraction....
Also... v sorry for being such a baby on this, I've been real lazy over
the past few years working just with windos and now realise I know
less than nothing.
Please help - this is a v bad weekend in deed. I got the bits for my
new linux box (dual celerons etc) and the mboard was dead so I
decided to strip down a PIII and use that till the replacement gets
here.
Hardware is as follows...
PIII 500
192mb RAM
8mb ATI xpert98
abit BE6 mboard
Diamond max 15gb HD
... nothing else other than CD and floppy
This is what heppens - can't install corel linux - it doesn't even spit
out the cd, just hangs when it sais "starting linux".
Installed Redhat 6 instead (freebie version off a mag), did a custom
install and it was real slow, tried adding - append="mem=192m" -
to lilo.conf but according to sys info (in KDE) theres only 13520k. I
only managed to get 1 nice boot before it started hanging - got as
far as displaying "LI" (first 2 letters of lilo) and then freezes. Could
only boot from floppy.
After much mucking about (stomping round and sulking too) I
decided to re-install, this time a standard "workstation" thinking a
simple approach was called for.
it got halway through and crashed (said something about abnormal
this and that and signal 7 and it being safe to reboot... sorry for
being vague but I got a bit peed and hit reset straight away.
Did another custom install of redhat (deleted previous partitions just
to be sure) and still can't get the memory to be acknowledged.
then it got worse, after adding the ...append="mem=192m" line
again and rebooting I get almost to the login prompt and then the
screen starts flickering for about 30 second then I get the following
message...
"according to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running
(1073819204), but seems to have been murdered mysteriously."
this message is repeated about a dozen time then...
"init it "x" respawning too fast: dissabled for 5 minutes."
I then did
"shutdown now -r"
and on closing processes get the message that
"shutting down xserver - failed".
This keeps happening regardles of floppy boot or hard disk boot.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction I'd be extreeemely
grateful. (I know windows sucks but I rebuilt the PIII with the
sound/tv/NIC/scanner card and two graphics cards, reconnected
the old hard drive and was back in windows all within ten minutes)
thanks in advance
