I am considering acquiring a set of Dual PPro motherboards to create a
COW or BEOWULF cluster for running simulations. I would like
recommendations regarding the suitability of the more modern processor
architectures. I am currently operating under the assumption that
bandwidth between the processor and ram will significantly reduce the
actual SMP performance on many of the new high speed chips. Also, the
PPro200's 1MB cache is an obvious advantage. Are there compelling
reasons to forgo the PPro and move to a newer architecture? I also am
working to keep the machine(s) within a reasonable budget. Any opinions
accepted. Thanks!
