Having followed this thread for a while, I fired up my smp box tonight
and started xmms and listened to Bruce workin' on the highway during
dinner with a monitor running and I saw no unusual cpu activity with
xmms, the mixer, or any other process and the cpu load was below 18% the
entire time usually around 2-3% and jumped up momentarily when the
monitor cranked out another summary line in the logfile. My box is
configured as follows:
Abit bp6 w/celerons overclocked at 550Mhz, 128MB pc100 atlas precision
ram, 47gb deskstar ide(20.5 + [EMAIL PROTECTED]), 18gb ultrastar scsi (where the
mp3's are stored), plextor 32x cdrom, plextor cdr, sb live, 3com 3c905
nic.
Linux smp kernel 2.2.16-1mdksmp installed from the mandrake cooker
archive (mostly because to date I have had no success with a 2.2 kernel
custom compiled and having the sb live function).
I'll try the 2.3.99-pre9 kernel later that I compiled with the sb live
driver (emu10k) which also appears to function great but I have never
run a monitor to check the system activity. Will let you know if
anything unusual happens, but I don't think that it will having listened
to mp3's and surfed and compiled kernels all at the same time with that
configuration.
I understand the frustration with the mp3, I like my music too! So, I
hope this helps you find the problem in your systems. My system
apparently works just fine and I know that when someone else can make
his system work, then I can get mine to function also. Happy hunting.
