So your advice is to go with 2.4? What kind of performance improvement can
be expected if using the new 2.4 instead of 2.2 on a dual P3 system?

I know the SMP code is supposed to have been improved in 2.4 but will it
be noticable with two processors? I hear the updates in the kernel are
primary for improving scalability with 4, 8 or more processors.
