After posting my original message, I tried some larger backups, and they
failed (seemed to just be continously trying to reposition the tape,
reporting write errors, and complaining that the fifo threshold could
not be increased any more.
Trying 4.03-pre2 worked much better, and I'm now backing up some
reasonable quantities of stuff.
However, the "Tape parameters inconsistency" is still being reported.
