hi folks

would really appreciate some help, thanks!

here's the story. been struggling with ftape 4.02, and the iomega
2 gig (new-expanded capacity 3.7 gig) tape drive. i have started
over from scratch to make SURE i am doing everything according to
instructions.

1) recompiled kernel 2.036 without support for qic-80, make sure
no ft line in /proc/devices

2) /etc/conf.modules looks like this:

alias eth0 3c509
alias char-major-27 zftape
options ftape ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,none,none,none

3) reboot, to make sure no processes have the tape drive. even
powered off, to make *sure*.

4) unpack sources of ftape 4.02 from scratch.

5) only modification to MCONFIG file is to change from a 486
to a 586 processor.

6) make, and make install. everything compiles clean, no errors
(i saved the output if you care to see it).

7) modprobe zftape. seems fine.

8)/sbin/modprobe ftape-internal
Initialization of ftape-internal failed
ftape: Device or resource busy

WHAT>>?? why does it say device or resource busy? there is no tape
in the drive, and the drive hasn't been accessed. according to the faq,
this message should only come if a process is still running holding
on to the drive, like tar. but the only command run was the modprobe, i
haven't
tried putting any tape in the drive yet >?????

i believe i am following the instructions exactly. at this point i am stuck

HELP!
thank you!
