Well, it was an error in the same place every time. For s**ts and grins, I
decided to run a "make dep" from the kernel source tree, and lo and
behold...it worked! Now, I have no clue as to why, seeing as I had already
run the whole gauntlet (make mrproper, dep, clean, boot, modules,
modules_install), but it did.
Seems to be typical of my luck lately...unexplainable bugs/fixes :)
