Hi Robert,
Cheap or not all drives, as far as I know, need to be able to detect
if a tape is in it. Matter-of-fact when you first put a tape in these
drives it does its reposition thing with the tape, so of cause it
knows. I just sent a previous response that might help you with this
problem.
