Update on Iomega Ditto....

I notice from my /var/log/messages, that, regardless of whether the Ditto has a tape
in, some part of ftape or other returns 'no tape present'. I assume that this is 
because
the Ditto is incapable of detecting if it has a tape in, being so cheap, and that the
'Device not configured' is a consequence of this? Am I right?
