The only way to increase the performance of this drive is by using a
very high end PC (PII at 400MHz or so). We see repositioning on almost
all platforms less than a 300MHz AMD K6-2 - slower systems mean more
repositioning. It gets even worse if we're trying to use it under X.
My recommendation: take the Max drive back and get a TR-4 from Seagate
(TST8000i). Current U.S.$ price is around $210 compared to the Max's
price of $199, the TR-4 is a bargain (and it works at 550KB/sec).
