i got my copy with the 5.1 distribution of RedHat...
I used it last night to make a backup... as part of the process it verifies
the integrity of the data on the tape..
oh yeah, you have to have ftape installed and working, which you seem to
have... say, what version of ftape are you using?

also, the ftape tools have an X11 front end called "ftape-tool" that
provides point and click backups... have you tried that?
