That sound is very odd and the same thing happened here. I could
hear it from the other room. Almost sounded like the heads were
looking to bust out of the computer.
When I moved Linux to another hard drive I seemed to have had the hardest
time getting the old partition formatted under DOS. Bad blocks up the
wazoo and format/fdisk took forever to work. Took a day and a half to fix it.
Found out that there was data on the old Linux partition that just
wouldn't come off. Norton's Wipeinfo/Wipedisk was used to completely
wipe the disk. After that fdisk and format did their job as I expected
and everything's fine.
That was months ago and the drive/partition has no problems. I guess
bad blocks aren't always indicative of physical errors.
