Well, firstly I'd use the latest snapshot in the unstabel directory.
I found that ftape-4.x-1998_18_12 worked fine, and Claus has released a
later version that also works (can't remember which filename though: NOT
1999_20_12)
the other versions failed to compile under late development/early 2.2
kernel.
