Greetings again...

Please respond directly to me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am not a member of this
list...thanks in advance...

I purchased a DittoMax for a Linux box in my library. Supposedly,
FTAPE 4.02 will drive the device. Administrators would not spring for
the cost of say an Exabyte 8mm SCSI tape drive for my Linux webserver, but
I insisted we needed backups. I researched and found that FTAPE 4.02
supports the DittoMax from Iomega, a relatively cheap solution.

Well, it does, ie., the drive responds to 'mt' commands like 'erase',
retension, etc. A 'tar' of the root filesystem seems to make a complete
backup onto a DittoMax 7 gig cartridge. With roughly 2 gig of data on the
hard drive, this takes a while to complete.

BUT...when I try to read the tape with 'tar' this doesn't get very far before
CRC errors kill 'tar'. I've tried cleaning the drive head, using different
tapes, etc. Using RedHat 5.2, kernel=2.0.36-3. The drive is an internal Ditto
Max with the 'Ditto Dash' accelerator card. I have tried to retension and
erase
the tape first, but with no luck. I've been going over suggestions found at
the
FTAPE website <http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/%7Eheine/ftape/> with no luck.

The only things I can think of left to do are perhaps:
upgrade the kernel to 2.1.x or, install the DittoMax in my Win95
workstation--and ftp the contents of the Linux box hard drive to my
workstation onto the DittoMax. Would anyone else have similar experiences
with FTAPE & DittoMax? Suggestions for resolution??

Thanks much!!!!!!!
