scsi tapes are supported directly by the kernel. You need to:

1) Enable the drive for your scsi adapter in the kernel. If you have also
hard disk attached to the scsi adapter and they are working, your scsi
adapter is already ok.
2) Enable support for scsi tapes in the kernel.
3) Install some tape control program. Usually the scsi tape version of mt
is used.

Support in the kernel may be enabled both installing modules or recompiling
it with the appropriate options. Choose the method you prefer.
