Jimmy,
SCSI tape drives just work under Linux. There are no special drivers to
install (assuming you have properly configured your kernel or you SCSI
adapter). To make sure that the device is being seen by your system,
'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' will list all of the SCSI devices that are
recognized.
Once you have the drive properly attached, you access it as a /dev/st*
device, where * is the number of the drive - 1 (i.e.: 1st drive = st0,
second drive = st1, etc.). Note that these numbers do not correspond to
the SCSI ID, so even if your tape is ID 5, but it's the first tape drive
on the adapter, it's still /dev/st0.
So, to use the drive, you need a backup package (of course, I recommend
BRU!).
A simple BRU backup of everything on your system would look like:
bru -cvvf /dev/st0 -L"My first full system backup" /
This tell the bru application to 'c'reate a backup of the entire system
(/) to device (-f) /dev/st0 with level 2 (-vv) verbosity and label (-L)
the backup "My first full system backup."
A tar backup would be similar (see the tar man page).
Good luck.
