please download the newest, but unstable version of ftape from Claus' web site:
http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/development.html
There you will find a link "unstable" - following that you will be
able to download a version from February 1999;
ftape-4.x-1999_02_07.tar.gz
this will compile successfully under 2.2.1.
