Download the ftape-tools-1.07 and use ftmt instead of mt. mt
is for SCSI/ATAPI-tapes, ftmt for floppy tapes.

Give us more information. Have a look at the relevant parts
of /var/log/messages. After an access to the floppy tape
three modules loaded should be loaded: ftape, zftape and
ftape-internal. Check with lsmod and make sure that
/etc/conf.modules is correct. I assume that you use
autoloading of modules.
