Thanks for your offer of help for my Ditto problem. I have
it working under SlakWare (at least the tests I've done)
and the whole process has been an eye opener. My problem
arose because I have 3 parallel ports on my system. Bear
with me as I try to explain it. I have an HP870, an IBM
4019 (daisy chained thru a scanner) and my SonyStor Station
attached to 3 physical ports addressed as follows.

                     DOS Linux Device
0x3BC irq 7 dma 3 LPT1 lp3 4019
0x378 irq 9 dma 1 LPT2 lp0 Ditto
0x278 irq 12 dma 3 LPT3 lp1 HP870

DOS assigns the ports LPT1,2, & 3 in the order he sees them.
In my case 3BC is on the motherboard, followed by 378 &
278 which are on a dual parallel port card. Linux screws
the whole thing up by ARBITRARILY (currently) hard assigning
the ports in order lp0 (378) lp1 (278) and lp3 (3BC)

The crux of the problem is as follows. At startup, Linux
starts polling on all 3 available ports which precludes
FTAPE from using address 0x378 where it is attached.
Following some advice from Juegren Leising, I killed lp with a
modprobe -r lp. Now the Ditto box worked but sans printing.
I looked for a command to selectively start polling on specific
addresses and had some luck.
In a printing howto, I stumbled over a command that
started polling on just the addresses 0x278 and 0x3BC
Now my printers work and my Ditto box does also. All of
this under SlakWare 3.5 (2.0.36). The problem is that
I want to use RedHat 5.2 (Apollo) and the damned FTAPE
latest skatey-eight version, won't compile. That's
where I am today. I feel what I've done under SlakWare
can be done under RedHat... now that I think I understand parallel
port addressing as it is today under Linux. I'll porbably have to
compile my RedHat kernel. Sure hope that's easier than FTAPE
has been. Just a compile away !

PS... Please understand that my Linux knowledge is VERY shallow and
what I think I saw maybe far from reality. The encouragement and help
I've received from various sources is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening.
