That was it! I had set the  BIOS IO recovery time a little too
aggressively.
Now everything works. Apologies for wasting bandwidth, but it might help
someone else. (Do we have anything on this in the FAQ/documentation? I
know
that it is obvious, but easily overlooked when everything else seems
ok...)
