Gerard,
You need to use the -unstable- ftape drivers. Contrary to their name,
they are quite stable.
I had a hard time actually finding the unstable drivers, so here's the
address you want:

I know the March 17 and March 25 snapshots worked for me, maybe the newer
ones work, too.
