ftape with kernel 2.2.6 and DITTO

I had previously used ftape 4.02 successfully with kernel 2.0.36 and
iomega Ditto Max, however, I cannot even compile the 4.02 files under
kernel 2.2.6. I read that the ftape which comes with 2.2.x is supposed to
be the latest version, however, the 2.2.6 that I downloaded still is using
ftape 3.04d. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
