strange happening !

I have installed the -25 version of FTAPE on my RedHat 5.2 & Slakware
3.5..... On both systems if I do a MODPROBE zftape my display blanks.
No key presses will re-activate the display.  If I (blindly !) key a
Ctrl-C and then startx I bring up Xwindows and then when I cancel
Xwindows, the display returns to normal and FTAPE works !!!
Any suggestions...
