Iomega (Sony StoreStation) Ditto 2G

I have a Iomega Ditto 2G parallel tape drive.
The FAQ's and documentation say these are supported by Ftape.
But the docs also kinda lead me to believe that they are supported
only if the run off of a FDC, in which case mine is a paper weight.

am I just out of luck with my particular tape drive, or has someone
managed to get one of these to work?  any help would be _greatly_
appreciated.  regards.
