I assume you cleaned the tape drive's head before and you used
'clean' (no additives) highly concentrated (i.e. 96% or so)
isopropanol.

Now, the big question: what do the log files say?  There should
be logfiles somewhere under /var in your system, as directed by
/etc/syslog.conf (usually).  Please extract the important lines
...

That is (being run all night) pretty natural for the tape and
drive -- unless you mean hot as in "Ouch, can barely touch it"
instead of "Oh, pretty warm".
