Have you read the HOWTO for the ftape package. It is for tapes that are
connected to a floppy-disk controller, not to an ISA or SCSI controller.

You will get this if you try to compile 4.02 with the 2.2.* kernels. You
would need (if you needed ftape at all) to use the "unstable" kernels.
