That is pretty much the order I did them in.  I had to do it twice 
though, because although I had just built a 2.2.9 kernel using the 'make 
zdisk' command, I forgot to reboot using the new kernel.  Reading the 
docs, I noticed that the config file from *the currently running kernel* 
is used during the ftape make process.  That was an easy fix though and 
only cost me a reboot and about five minutes compile time.

OK.  I have to ask again, where is this in the documentation?  I've 
looked at the INSTALL document a couple of times, and it may be possible 
that I have overlooked it.  Where does it say that with the 2.2.x 
kernels, you should not configure ftape into the kernel.  I have it in 
there now that I compiled a 2.2.9 kernel, and it would be simple to take 
it out, but I would love to have some clarity on this.
