Ok, the reason is:
If you compile it into the kernel (not as a module) you have
a 3.04d ftape (waaay old) in there. That can give you
trouble, so that's not good.
If you compile it as a module, you create modules for 3.04
and later you create other modules for ftape 4.x. If you
recompile the kernel (more exactly, use make modules_install)
you can overwrite (some of) your ftape modules. That is true
even if you just changed some kernel parameters, not upgraded
the kernel (and thus would not have to recompile/reinstall
the fttape 4.x modules normally).
While you might get away with compiling the old ftape as
module as well, it's a exercise in pointlessness (you'll never
use the code you compiled there) and can lead to frustration
("I'll just compile XXX in as an extra module." ... "Uh, why
did my backup script die? Why don't I have a recent backup?")
If that is not in the documentation, it pretty well should be,
IMHO, but might have been removed for 3.04d once it went into
the kernel (and not readded when it 4.x came out).
