DON'T do that.  :-/

2.08 is 2+ years old.  You want a 4.x version (which won't
do compression itself, there are good reasons to do that in
userland (and don't use tar | gzip or something) --- if you
absolutely, positively need compression, use ftape 3.04d).

If you use a 2.2.x kernel, try the latest 'unstable' driver
(the Kernel interface changed, you'll get a 'timeout' structure
error), they are in fact quite stable.
