I changed DMA back to "options ftape-internal ft_fdc_base=0x180 ft_fdc_irq=9
ft_fdc_dma=3" and I finally had to recompile ftape under kernel 2.0.36.1.
Now ftape is working just fine. Thanks for all your help.
