Don't use 4.02 with a 2.2.x kernel. The kernel contains 3.04d, which
works with some tape drives. Otherwise you need the "unstable" version
of ftape (don't worry, it's fairly stable) available from:
http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/archives/ftape-4.x/unstable/
