It is too bad there is no way to get up a FAQ for a mailing list. It
is easier for a newsgroup.

This question comes up every day or so.

For the 2.2.* kernels, the 4.02 version of ftape will not work. You
will need to use one of the "unstable" versions (might as well take
the most recent). You will need the utilities as well. Links to them
can be found at URL:

If you are running something like Red Hat Linux 6.0, and have never
built the kernel you are running, you may need to start a build to
produce the needed /usr/src/linux/.config file. I do this by going to
that directory and doing make xconfig. I change only the Ftape stuff
and doing a save and exit. Since I did not wish to change the kernel,
I did not bother to build or install the kernel.
