Trying to kill the keyboard, [EMAIL PROTECTED] produced:

A reason to change vendors the next time (unless they respond
differently to questions), I think.

I would remove all the modules (rmmod) and then insmod them
hand, one by one, giving the options in the command line.
(Note that your options in /etc/conf.modules are only read if
you use the modprobe wrapper ... and you did use depmod -a?)
That way you can test out the parameters more easily ... 

But I see you have a usage count of -1 there for the
compressor and zftape.  That is a bug and may need a reboot
to remove these modules ... sorry. 

Other than that I can only offer you use ftmt to test whether
your tape responds ... and *do* look into the logs, look how
each module is started, look if there are any strange
messages, check the cables ... 

Unluckily I am not a specialist with parallel port tapes.
