Robert Aubele and Wolfgang Weisselberg have advised me to use the
unstable code from

  http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/archives/ftape-4.x/unstable/

ftape-4.x-1999_06_30 to be precise, so I now have a clean compile.
This is with linux 2.2.9 and a HP 5Gb Colorado drive for parallel port.
The HP docs are of the form "Run this windows program".

I now get messages like "nqft0: Device not configured" when testing tar or
mt for any of my *ft0 devices.

I have these modules:

Module Size Used by
bpck-fdc 30264 0
trakker 14772 0
parport 7124 0 (unused)
ftape-internal 10252 0
zft-compressor 16652 -1
zftape 88620 -1 [zft-compressor]
ftape 147800 0 [bpck-fdc trakker ftape-internal zft-compressor zftape]

This happens with or without the suggested conf.modules entries
    alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
    pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
    alias char-major-27 zftape
    options ftape ft_fdc_driver=bpck-fdc:trakker,none,none,none

What should be my next steps please ?
