I want to add my experience with compiling the unstable versions:
I tried various versions, and the only version that would compile for me
was the 1999_09_11 version of both, ftape-4.x and ftape-tools.
So, get the two archives for ftape and the ftape-tools, and try to compile
them. Worked fine for me with Mandrake 6.1 (pgcc 2.95.1 and newest
glibc as of 10/19/99). Make sure you uninstall any ftape modules you
have installed before "make install" of the ftape-4.x, and make sure you
do not have ftape compiled into the kernel. Just make ftape and zftape
modules, comple & install the kernel, and overwrite the kernel modules
with the ones you compile from the ftape-4.x archive.
That's at least how it worked for me =)

Hope that helps
Lutz
