I once put 4 brand new tapes on top of my Stero speakers, needless to say it
destoried them.  They didn't work in either Windows or Linux :(

I still got them, I don't know how to do a low level format on them in
either Window or Linux, I assume that a low level format of the tape would
fix it, but don't know how...

I didn't ask Iomega to replace them, yet.

how do you mean broken, do you mean like phyiscally the tape cover broke,
bad format or other?
