Even if you compile the built-in version of ftape, there will be a
zft-compressor.o module placed in /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/misc
which you need to load.

There are a couple of ways to do this, such as:

/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe zft-compressor
