Use a program you understand and know how to get running in
case your HD decides to die (worst case) and know how to get
back single files and directories.

Your backup plan depends on how much you value your data (I
don't mind if some Windows 3.x I might have had once dies ...
I don't run it anyway, but I do care for my mails, for example)

You should not overwrite working copies of libraries and
programs you are currently using, for example gzip (if used!).

It should not matter, as long as you can restore your system
after bootstrapping it from your distribution. (Worst case:
your computer including tape drive died screaming.) Usually
that will mean you need/want to restore from console, using
an emergency system im RAM or on the later-to-be-SWAP partition.

You *must* test your backups, always, always compare them.
You *must* test that you can restore your system from an
emergency system.
You *must* have reasonably new backups (weight your time against
the value of the data and think *strongly* about automating
the system.)

Everything else is candy on top. :-)
