Hi,
My lab upgraded to RH 6.1 recently and found that we can't perform a tape
backup anymore on our Connor CTT8000-A. One of the posts I've found on
the web (http://www.tux.org/hypermail/linux-kernel/1999week13/0273.html)
suggested mailing this list to find out about setting up SCSI tape
emulation. I'm not exactly sure how to do this.. I've already enabled
Scsi emulation in the kernel, SCSI tape support, and IDE tape support, but
"mt -f /dev/st0 retension" reports that no device is present (for all
/dev/st{x}, actually). I must be doing something wrong.. if anyone on
this list knows, please let me know.
Also, I'm trying to find a patch that'll fix my problems. Originally, I
was getting several I/O errors along with DSC timeouts (whatever those
are). I can reproduce the actual ATAPI sense key errors if you need them.
Andre Hendrick pointed me to one of his patches
(http://linux.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/), but it didn't
work either, unless I patched my kernel incorrectly. It wasn't really
clear to me what I had to do. One of the documents (Onstream_IDE, I
think) in the directory listed above talks about a kernel prepatch 2 - 11.
I'm still green when it comes to kernel stuff, so I don't know what that
means. I grabbed the 2.2.14 kernel (which the patches were written for,
afaict), applied the patch (without errors) and compiled and tested the
kernel (without errors, other than the tape failure). Andre mentioned
that his ide tape driver patch supports OnStream's DI-30, which I'm
assuming is an internal chip or something on my Connor tape drive. I
replied to him requesting more information last week, but I still haven't
heard back from him. If someone else on this list can shed some light on
any of this info, I'd appreciate it.
In addition to trying to get the CTT8000-A to work, the owner of the lab
bought a Sony SuperStation tape drive. I tried getting that one to work,
too, with even poorer results. If anyone knows how to get one of those
working on RH 6.1 (kernel 2.2.12-20, I believe), let me know.
Thanks for your time. Please CC me on any response as I am not a member
of this mailing list.
Josh.
