I think the speed is very low, but not likely to get better, as you are
attempting to run it on a machine below the minimum stated spec for the
tape drive under Windows (P100).  Under Linux the minimum spec needs to
be higher.

Tim Jones has said "no joy with Max on less than a P5-166MHz", although
with tuning I've got it running with a P133.  The transfer rate I've
seen reported by dump is 160Kps (1280 kbps).

I think with the 486 you are going to continually get overrun errors
which will dramatically slow down the drive (and I'm sure shorten the
tape life).

My original article on tuning ftape for the Ditto Max has been placed
in the Tech Tips area on LinuxTapeCert.org.  This also has the latest
version of the ftape driver (ftape-4.x-1999_09_11.tar.gz).
