Clive,

A bit of the kernel changed, so there is no variable called timeout
any more - you'll need to get the latest unstable version for this to
work (ftape-4.x-1999_09_11 works).

I had this problem as well - after about an hour of digging into the
source and finding the cause, I went to report it as a bug and found
it already there, fixed :-)
