I suggest to check the message under /proc/k.... or /var/log/messages. Use cat for /proc/k.... If the device is not configured probably the modules zftape has a used number -1 (use lsmod to see it). If that is the case this means the virtual device is not working and your tape wont work. I have the same problem and I did not succeed to fix it. It seems a problem in the ftape package, in my case it is at the level of parallel port configuration, you will realize what level that problem happen by checking the two files mentioned above.
