If you set CONF_MODVERSION, make sure that your kernel was built with
Module Versioning turned on. The error messages indicate that it is not
(or that you don't have the kernel sources installed and configured).

While we (the Linux kernel ftape hackers) are not actively continuing
development on the ftape project, we are attempting to maintain it
against the current kernel releases. The main reason for the stop in
development is caused by the fact that what we have works (for the most
part), and the vendors are no longer developing Floppy (QIC-117)
devices. ATAPI/IDE devices are coming in at similar prices with much
higher performance and capacities.
