I had the same problem with SuSE 6.2 and a 2.2.10 Kernel. The standard
floppy tape devices seem to have been changed to ..rft.. and ..nrft.. . I used
the following device list to recreate the appropriate devices (use "mknod" to
create them):

After creating these everything went smooth again. With the exception of
ftformat, which causes an error "Unknown format API version. Giving up.", so
you cannot format tapes at the moment. But you can use the rest of the
ftape-tools, or taper, or what you want. I use nzqft0 as standard tape device,
and it works.
