Got it - makes sense. The weird thing is, though, is that the errors
seem to consistently (and only) happen when reading the beginning of a
tape. Now, though, they don't interfere with tar: last night I did a
7.6G backup and compare with tar (all the data on my 10G disk), and it
worked perfectly. Note that I wasn't actively using the machine at
the time, so I'm not sure about the X lockups after the patch - but
that is a problem I saw before.
Even if it is a hack, it is nice to know that my new drive does work!
