I added the above to /etc/conf* but do not get any additional log output
- am I supposed to include something in /etc/syslog.conf as well?  I
still get all the other ftape output to /var/log/messages so I expected
the new stuff to show up there as well.  It didn't.  When I last
compiled ftape I did set in MCONFIG:
 
TRACE_FLAGS = -DCONFIG_FT_NO_TRACE

so maybe that's why no addt'l output.  Anyway if you don't reply to this
I'm going to move on to the next msg you sent where you say to
recompile. etc.  I'll reset TRACE_FLAGS when I do and when I finish
what's in your last message I'll mail with results of instructions in 
both of your messages...
