Hi all,

I've just compiled ftape-4.04a and installed in onto my Twin PII300 MHz
running Linux Mandrake 7.0 but I cannot seem to get it do anything. I've
included all the information I can think of (sorry if its too much). I
followed the instructions and built this without compiling into the kernel.
So I'll just run through the relevant information and then show the problem.

******* Linux Version
[root@mybox root]# uname -a
Linux mybox.localdomain 2.2.14-15mdk #10 SMP Fri Aug 4 13:43:05 EST 2000
i686 unknown

******* Now I can to a ftmt status and a mt status (see here)

[root@mybox root]# ftmt -f /dev/ftape status
This is a Conner TSM420R/TST800R floppy tape drive, (drive type = 0x0150)
drive status = 0x00029809
generic drive status = 0x00040000
(In particular: * door open (no tape) * )
sense key error = 0x00000c22
residue count = 0
file number = -1
block number = -1

[root@mybox root]# mt -f /dev/ftape status
qic-117 drive type = 0x00150
File number=-1, block number=-1.
mt_resid: 0, mt_erreg: 0xc22
mt_dsreg: 0x29809, mt_gstat: 0x40000
General status bits on (40000):
 DR_OPEN

******* I can then put in a tape and get this:

[root@mybox root]# mt -f /dev/ftape status
qic-117 drive type = 0x00150
File number=-1, block number=-1.
mt_resid: 0, mt_erreg: 0xe22
mt_dsreg: 0x29845, mt_gstat: 0x41000000
General status bits on (41000000):
 BOT ONLINE

******* Also, here are the versions of mt and ftmt:
[root@mybox root]# ftmt --version
GNU mt version 2.4.2, adapted for ftape-tools 1.09
[root@mybox root]# mt -v
mt-st v. 0.5b

******* It appears to rewind but won't retention or do anything else
[root@mybox root]# ftmt -f /dev/ftape rewind
[root@mybox root]# ftmt -f /dev/ftape reten
ftmt: /dev/ftape: Input/output error
[root@mybox root]# ftmt -f /dev/qft0 reten
ftmt: /dev/qft0: Input/output error

Any ideas?

Thanks

Murray

PS One final point, the tape drive is listed as supporting TR1, 8mm and
QIC-80. I've been able to get a TR1 tape in but 8mm tapes won't fit in the
drive door. Any ideas?
