I just came across this message in my old mail folder. A patch was sent in recently that might help with your problem. You can find the patch (for 2.6.8) here: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-usb-devel&m=109269661307143&q=raw The issue addressed by that patch has symptoms less severe than a total system freeze, so maybe it won't help. But it's worth a try.
