Looks like I have been bitten - again - by bad hardware, this time the system board or memory. After transplanting the entire USB setup, consisting of the PCI USB 2.0 card, the cable, the USB-to-IDE enclosure and the disk to another system, the stress test script has now been running for a week. The other system runs fine on 2.6 without the USB load though. Bummer. So I think that I probably don't need that patch any more. Thanks for your time.
